Worship First

Last week I mentioned I had one of those days.

Everything seemed to be falling apart.
Nothing went as planned.
I felt I was drowning in catastrophe.
And I wanted to scream Enough’s enough!

It wasn’t a good day.
Let alone a good few months.

And yet, God was up to something.

Every year, I go through a YouVersion Bible Reading Plan. I don’t always stick to it (I was a literature major in college – I like to study more than just read), but it’s my way of being in the Word every day.

This year, I stared my reading plan a few days early, and chose the Chronological Reading Plan — putting the stories of the bible in order of when they happened.

When I hit my one of those days, the reading plan had me in a much needed spot.

Job.
Chapter 1.

At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.
Job 1:20-22

Job’s first response to losing everything — his business, servants, livestock, and children — was worship.

He didn’t freak out.
He didn’t complain.
He didn’t get on Facebook and post about his woes.

Job positioned himself in a posture of worship.
And praised the God who gave and who took away.

I’m not there, yet. And my guess is, neither are you.

My natural tendency in hard times is not usually worship.
But I want it to be.

Friday night, I vacuumed a total of 23 gallons of water out of my basement. The mix of heavy rain and melting snow was too much for my old house.

As I stood there, vacuum in hand, wrestling with whether or not I should head out to a planned worship night at a friend’s house, one thought rolled through my head.

Job. Chapter 1.

I cleaned up what I could, got ready, stressed over the water still trickling in, and trusted God to take care of the details.

And when I got home five hours later, there were only a few damp spots in the basement.

Worship first.
It puts everything else in perspective.

Question: Do you tend to stress first or worship first? How can you start worshipping first more often?
