Too Darn Busy

Jason VanaJason Vana

too darn busy

I’m a busy person.

I work a full time job.
Help run an international ministry.
Design and market businesses in my spare time.
Mentor youth and college ministry leaders.
Spend time with friends.
Cook, clean, buy groceries, do laundry.

The list goes on and on.

Chances are, you’re pretty busy, too.

It just seems to be the way life is going. Gone are the days of having spare time on your hands. The days of hobbies, lounging around, and being still.

Everyone, everywhere, is just busy.

If we’re honest with ourselves, most of us just like being busy.
I know I do.

Busy makes us feel important.
It makes us feel needed.
It gives the illusion that our lives matter.
That we’re accomplishing something of great importance.

Busy helps us cope.

It allows us to push aside those thoughts we just don’t want to deal with, bury the fears we have about ourselves, and pretend that everything is okay.

When you’re too busy to sit still, you don’t have to think about what you’re doing with your life.
Or where you’re weak.
Or where you need improvement.

Being busy is a drug most of us are addicted to. And it’s ruining our lives. Tweet this

Can I offer an alternative suggestion? A different perspective on how to live?

Get less busy.

Give up some of the tasks you’ve taken on.
Step down from some of organizations you help with.
Stop saying yes to every serving opportunity that comes your way.
Be okay with not accomplishing everything you want to do in a day.
Make some hard choices of what is most important to you – and cut out the rest.

While being busy may give us the illusion that our lives matter, more often than not, it’s keeping us distracted from the most important things.

Family.
Friends.
God.

No one is remembered for how many serving opportunities they took, or how many activities they juggled, or the number of blog posts they wrote.

We’re remembered for the impact we made in the lives of others.

The greatest impact we can make with our lives is to focus on that which is most important. Tweet this

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to live differently – to stop being too darn busy and start being intentional with the things that really matter.

What could you cut out of your life today to give you more time to focus on the things that truly matter? Leave a comment below.
