Take the Step

When it comes to a dream or calling, most of us want the blueprint before we take a step.

We want to know exactly what we should do.
What job we should take.
Where we should live.
Who we should date / marry.
What house we should buy.
What organization to partner with.
How much money we need.
When it will all take place.

We may know God has a plan for us, but if we’re honest, most of us hesitate only because we’re hoping to catch a glimpse at that plan.

Or photocopy the whole thing.

But if you’ve pursued a dream or God’s call on your life for any amount of time, you know it doesn’t work that way.

God rarely shows us the plan. He simply gives us the next step.

When the children of Israel were finally getting ready to cross the Jordan River and head into the Promised Land, God gave them an interesting command.

God wanted the priests to take the ark of the covenant and start walking into the Jordan River — and said he would stop the waters so they could cross on dry ground, but not before.

There they were, gathered on the edge of a flooded, rushing river with the command to walk in and trust that the waters would stop.

It probably wasn’t an easy promise to believe.

Only two of the Israelites on the edge of that river saw what God did at the Red Sea — when he parted the waters and allowed them to cross on dry ground. The rest were all born in the desert.

They hadn’t seen God perform that miracle. They didn’t know if He would really do it. And they didn’t know when.

Would it be when the priests’ toes hit the water?
Would they have to be ankle or knee deep?
Would the current rush them away before God stopped the water?
Would they slip and accidentally drop the ark and cause God to drown them instead?

We’ve all had similar questions.

When is God doing to come through on this bill?
Is this the job I need to take, or is He bringing a different one my way?
Will God come through right away, or do I need to find another solution just in case?

God promises He will come through — He just rarely tells us when.

Instead, He asks us to trust Him, and begin to take a step forward in the direction of our calling.

Even if the waters are raging, the questions are flying, and you have no clue how it will all work out.

“Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing.”
Joshua 3:15-16a

Question: Where do you need to stop hesitating and take a step in the direction of your dream or calling?
