Size Matters

The old adage is true: size matters.

If you don’t believe me, ask anyone in the construction industry.

The size of the foundation you lay determines what you can build on top of it.

The foundation laid for my 1,100 square foot house (yea, it’s a small house) could not hold a building the size of the Sears Tower. The foundation would collapse within hours, if not minutes, and bring the building down with it.

The reverse is true as well: the foundation laid for the Sears Tower would look pretty silly with my 1,100 square foot house sitting on top of it. That’s a lot of money, energy, and resources spent, and a lot of cement space, for a tiny house.

Size matters.

It matters in construction and it matters in your life.

The foundation you lay in your life determines the kind of life you will have.

We often come to God expecting Him to do great things with our lives — to build some fantastic, world-impacting life — but only give Him a small foundation to build on.

We want to impact the world, but won’t even talk to our neighbors about Christ.
We want to lead a powerful ministry, but it’s beneath us to serve in the children’s ministry of our church.
We want a deep, intimate relationship with God, but can’t even find the time to read our bible.
We want to run a successful business, but cut corners anywhere we can.
We want to raise godly kids, but think the TV is a good enough babysitter.

God will only build in our lives off the size of foundation we give Him.

If you want a world-impacting life, you need to lay a larger foundation.

People are often amazed to hear I lead an international ministry — with Ignite groups here in America and in the Czech Republic. Some have even said they want that kind of ministry.

The difference is, I’ve laid that foundation.

I did the hard work of fundraising year after year after year to travel to the Czech Republic. For years, I spent my only two weeks of vacation to do ministry in another country. I went back again and again even when it seemed like we weren’t making that much of an impact. I built relationships throughout the year, poured out into others while there, and consistently pray for the people of that country.

I was laying a foundation.
It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t always glamorous.

But the result was a larger foundation in my life so God could build something greater.

Size matters.

Question: How can you lay a larger foundation in your life?
