This July will mark my twelfth trip to the Czech Republic.
In those twelve trips, I’ve had the opportunity to be part of a church planting project with Next Level International in the eastern region of the country — helping to plant six new churches in this predominately atheistic country. I’ve been able to speak at multiple churches and youth groups, help with Kristfest (the national youth camp), lead outreaches and youth retreats, helped launch the first Ignite group in Czech, co-started the Ignite Conference — a leadership conference for youth, young adult, and university ministry leaders, spoken into countless people’s lives, traveled to Poland and Germany and England, and seen God do some amazing things in the lives of young people.
This year’s trip will be no different.
I will be leading sessions at Kristfest, heading up the Ignite Conference, traveling to speak at churches and youth groups, meeting with ministry leaders to help advance the work they are doing, speaking into the lives of youth and youth leaders, praying for people, use my gifts and talents to help push along what God wants to do in that country.
I know it will be a powerful trip.
But the other day, as I was shooting the video below, I realized there is a bit more significance behind this year’s trip than any trip in the past.
This is my twelfth trip.
Building the Foundation
Twelve is a significant number.
Whenever you see the number twelve in scripture, it represents the idea of foundation — the structure on which something else is built. (You can learn all about the importance of foundations in these posts)
Israel had 12 tribes.
The temple had 12 columns.
The High Priest’s breastplate had 12 gems.
Jesus had 12 disciples.
Twelve is the number God uses to signify the fullness of the foundation that will support the work He plans to do.
And this is my twelfth trip.
What I didn’t realize until recently was that these past eleven trips were all just laying a foundation for something greater.
It’s a humbling — and overwhelming — thought.
If the foundation of what God has for me in the Czech Republic includes church planting, leadership conferences, mission trips, training sessions, and connecting me to churches throughout the country, what is He planning to build on top of it?
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…”
Persevering in the Call
The opportunities God has opened for me in Czech didn’t come over night.
I didn’t put together a leadership conference my first trip, or start an Ignite group, or help plant a church, or even travel to numerous places to speak. I didn’t lead a team, or preach in Czech, or pray for people in the country.
In fact, all the ministry I got to do that trip — preaching and praying for people — happened in Poland.
My first time in Czech, I attended a meeting.
But the longer I stuck with it, the more times I returned, the more opportunities opened to me.
The same is true of your calling.
God isn’t going to give you the fullness of your calling overnight. You aren’t going to wake up one morning and out of the blue be handed amazing opportunities.
That only comes with perseverance.

I’ve chosen every year to persevere in this calling, and I’ve been privileged to be a part of something great. The question you need to ask yourself:
