Trying to Find Life Among the Dead

Jason VanaJason Vana

finding life among the dead

“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!” Luke 24:5b-6a

The words the angels spoke to the women who discovered the empty tomb of Christ resonate with me every Easter.

Why do you look for the living among the dead?

It’s a question that is just as viable today as it was 2,000 years ago.

If we’re honest with ourselves, we’re guilty of looking for the living, looking for life, among the dead.

We look for the job that will solve all our financial problems.
We seek out the relationship that will make us feel whole.
We go crazy buying the latest iGadget that will make us look cool.
We think the right car will give us the status we seek.
We try to find the TV show that gives us an escape from the stress.
We save up for the vacation that will melt away all the frustrations and solve all our problems.
We hop on the latest fashion trends to help us fit in.
We strive for the success that will give our lives meaning.
We work for the body that will finally give us some confidence.

Looking for the living among the dead.

But, none of those things ever really deliver.

Fulfillment
Belonging
Love
Acceptance
Worth
Meaning
Life

Try to find those in the form of another person or possession or success and we’re left emptier than when we began.

True life cannot be found in people or possessions. It’s found in only one place. Jesus. Tweet this

The women at the tomb learned that same truth.

The came expecting to anoint the body of their departed rabbi. They were looking for closure, for peace, for some kind of experience that would tell them everything would be okay.

They were looking for life.
They were just looking in the wrong place.

Don’t fall into the belief that life can be found among the dead — that hope and peace and joy and fulfillment and worth and meaning and belonging will be discovered the tomb of possessions, wealth, success, and dream relationships.

Life is only found in one place.
And He is no longer in the tomb.
