Becoming Like Christ

Jesus loves sinners.
I think we all would agree with that statement.

When Jesus walked the earth, he spent time with sinners. He ate meals with tax collectors, considered to be traitors to their own people. He dined with prostitutes and lepers. He stood up for the adulterous woman. He invited himself over to a a head tax collector’s house. He allowed a sinful woman to wash his feet. He called the misfits, the dropouts, those not good enough to be religious leaders, to be his disciples.

He went to their parties.
Drank their wine.
Ate at their tables.
Visited their homes.
Healed their loved ones.
Invited them in, when everyone else avoided them.

Jesus went out of his way to bring light to those who needed it most.

And He calls us to do the same.

“In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

Christ isn’t coming back for the church that lives in its own bubble.
He isn’t satisfied when all our acquaintances and friends are Christian.
He hasn’t called us to pull out of the world, avoid those who don’t know Him and huddle together in the hopes of just making it out of this world without sinning.

He called us to go.

To eat with those who don’t know Him.
To befriend the homosexual couple down the street.
To help the illegal immigrant on the other side of town.
To look after the drunk, the drug addict, and the depressed.
To spend time with the frat boy, band geek and wanna-be thug.
To sit with those of differing political views.
To dine with the atheist and Muslim and Hindu.
To love the kid who bullies you, bless those who insult you and spend time with those who curse our God.

We don’t need another bible study to attend. We don’t need another church service to grow closer to God. We don’t need another fellowship night, revival service or worship gathering to become more like Christ.

Christ spent His time on this earth befriending and loving sinners.
To live any other way makes us less like Christ, and more like the Pharisees.

How are you personally spending time with those who don’t know Christ?
