Be Still and Know

I’m not a real “be still” kind of guy.

I fidget. I pace. I’m always chewing on something. My mind races faster than I can write, or even comprehend what I’m thinking. I’m always going, always doing. If I’m not writing, I’m reading. If I’m not reading, I’m doing graphic design projects. I have multiple home improvement projects going, and countless others on my to-do list. Even on my days off, I find something to occupy my time. Cleaning the house, doing the dishes, tweaking one of the many web sites I administer, meeting with students or envisioning new ways to make Ignite better.

I rarely am still.

While I like to blame it on that Achiever strength hard at work in me, while I say it’s because I lead Ignite and my own marketing business and work part-time and need to do even more to make enough to live on, while I can point the finger and find excuses for my lack of stillness, the truth is, I don’t like being still.

I don’t like sitting around with nothing to do.
I don’t like quieting my mind and thinking of nothing.
I don’t like sitting in silence, meditating on my day and asking what I could have done better.
I want to do something, achieve something, go somewhere and fill my hours and days with constant motion.
I want to make the most of every minute, every second, and pad my list with a number of accomplishments.

“Be still, and know that I am God” — Psalm 46:10

It’s in the stillness that we have no place to run. It’s in the stillness that our achievements are stripped away. It’s in the stillness that our excuses melt away, our motivations are revealed and our sins are laid bare. It pushes us to face those things we would rather not face, challenges us to deal with the hurts and pains and sin in our lives, and causes us change.

It’s in the stillness that we come face to face with who we really are, and see Him for who He really is.

How do you “be still” before God?
